Social Change in Agriculture Posted on 07 December 2024 By Eric Flores Social Change in Agriculture – Indonesia as an agricultural country has a large part of its population that depends on the agricultural sector for its livelihood. Agriculture has a very important role in the structure of national development, especially in the context of national socio-economics. This sector is the main focus of national development, especially in the management and utilization of food commodities. Social Change in Agriculture surlerythme – Agricultural development is a process of change or transformation that involves various aspects in the agricultural sector. These aspects include developments in technology, economy, and social and cultural. In order for national development to be achieved, social change is needed in people’s lives. Social change itself is a form of transition that changes the order of life of a society in a sustainable manner, in line with dynamic social nature. Human life, basically, continues to develop and change, both quickly (revolution) and slowly (evolution). According to Hirschman, social change is a phenomenon that arises due to the influence of communication and people’s mindsets, which are influenced by internal factors such as conflict, changes in population, new discoveries, and external factors such as natural disasters. One of the significant social changes in the agricultural sector is the result of modernization. Over time, the use of technology in agriculture has become increasingly sophisticated. The presence of various agricultural tools and machines, such as tractors, rice transplanters, and combine harvesters, has brought about major changes in agricultural activities in Indonesia. For example, in the past, farmers plowed rice fields with the help of livestock such as cows or buffaloes, which took a long time. However, today, farmers can use tractors to plow rice fields, so that work time becomes more efficient. In addition, many activities in the process of planting to harvesting have now also been transferred to machines. Before the existence of modern tools and machines, farmers often employed neighbors or people around them to help with the planting process, which fostered a sense of mutual cooperation and togetherness among residents. Now, with the presence of technology, these collaborative practices are slowly starting to fade. Nowadays, the attention of the younger generation to the agricultural sector is decreasing. The impact of globalization and modernization makes the agricultural sector seen as less promising, so that the number of workers willing to enter this field is decreasing. This phenomenon certainly has the potential to affect the sustainability of agriculture in the future, which in turn can have an impact on the availability of food. Therefore, guidance and counseling from various parties are needed to attract the interest of the younger generation to contribute to the agricultural sector. In the past, every farmer in a village carried out all activities, from pre-planting to marketing, independently. This caused them to experience significant losses when faced with failure. However, along with government regulations that encourage the formation of institutions in the agricultural sector, this situation began to change. The institutions formed include institutions providing input, providing capital, providing labor, providing land and water, processing institutions for agricultural products, marketing institutions, and information providing institutions. The existence of these institutions aims to meet all the needs of farmers, so that national development in the agricultural sector can be realized more effectively.
